Macrame Free Patterns- How to Tie Square Knots and Spiral Hitch

Summary: Among numerous macrame free patterns, the square knot is the most commonly used decorative knot. By using two or more working ends, they can be simply worked in the bracelets or other body jewelry.

In this article, I also present the very popular spiral hitch which is quite similar to square knot. Let's take a look where the exact difference between square knots ans spiral hitch lies!

Instrutions on how to tie square knots and spiral hitch:

Part 1: Square Knot

Step1: Prepare one working end and one holding end. Fold the long working end into two half segments (black and red in the diagram). Place the working end horizontally on flat, and then lay the holding end over vertically;

Step2: Use the left working end (black) and curve it over holding end, to the right side;

Step3: Direct the right working end (red) over the tail of left cord end. Then go under the holding end and exit at the loop on left side;

Step4: Tighten the first half of the square knot;

Step5: Take the working end (black) on right side and do repeat the step2~3;

Step6: Tighten the latter half of knot and you will see the complete square knot as below.

Part 2: Spiral Hitch

Step1: Curve the left working end over holding end, to the right side. Next, pass the right working end under holding end and then exit at the loop on left side(totally as same as the step1 for square knot);
