I have seen the wire knot ring around, but rarely do I see the string ones. On the other hand, for most crafters, crochet is a challenge to construct. So, here I recommend this macrame ring pattern out of basic alternating half hitch knots. Even a beginner can understand and finish it easily.

Supplies needed for making the half hitch knot ring:

1.5mm Aluminum Wire
4mm Suede Cord (or 1mm Nylon Thread)
Lighter
Round Nose Pliers
Wire Cutter Pliers
Side Cutting Pliers

How to macrame the alternating half hitch knot ring?

Step 1: Make the half wire ring

1st, cut a length of 10cm aluminum wire;
2nd, fold the wire in half and wrap one around the other for 2 or 3 times;
3rd, twist the two wire ends until the length get 1/2 of your finger circumference;
4th, make a wrapped loop with the longer wire end;
5th, curve the prepared wire component around a same size marker pen or something else.

Step 2: Macrame the alternating half hitch knots

1st, prepare a length of 30cm long suede cord;
2nd, attach the suede cord to one loop by tying one lark’s head knot;
3rd, take the right end and tie a half hitch knot around the left one;
4th, regard the left one as working end and tie another half hitch knot around the right one;
5th, keep tying half hitch knots with two cord ends alternately for the rest 1/2 ring part;
6th, pass the two cord ends through the other loop. Tie a square knot to finish the macrame part.

The alternating half hitch knot is used to form a chain, and now widely-used while making simple one-strand bracelet and necklace, as well as today’s knot ring. Besides, there are other similar techniques listed under Knot Tying Techniques. If you wanna learn more knots, just go for it!
